ALPUJARRA Energy Community
renewable, local, and in collective

link to the in(formación) page (spanish)
The Alpujarra energy community celebrated its first year of existence on 9 September 2025.
Steps taken:
- The IDAE awarded us a grant that finances 48% of the first production point. The grant is worth €20,000. We have 14 months to complete the installation, until November 2026.
- Develop a project for the self-installation of 800W (or 2500W with lithium battery) micro home solar installations.
- Open the office at Calle Real no. 5 in Orgiva, every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- Offer members advice at the office when they have problems with their electricity bills.
- Have more than 20 members.
Next steps:
- Organise a workshop on what energy is and how to overcome the fear of mathematical formulas.
- Organise a practical workshop on ‘building your own electric bike for less than €400.
- Find 27 members who want to have 1,000 watts of community solar power (the energy from two large panels).
- Find a roof to install 80 solar panels near Orgiva in the first phase. (about to be finalised)
- Create an internal community bank to finance the other part of the cost of installing the production point, €12,000.
- Propose training to install a micro 800W installation (or 2500W with a lithium battery) in homes in a (quasi) autonomous manner.
how does collective self-consumption work?

From the point of production (80 panels in phase 1), members can receive 1,000 watts of solar energy from solar panels (2 large panels) through the electricity cables that are already connected to their house, flat, farmhouse or small business.
The electricity meter must be located within a 2 km radius of the point of production.
how much will it cost me to receive community solar energy?
how many kWh will I receive each month?
The final figures will be decided at the extraordinary general meeting in January 2026.
The proposal is as follows:
Each member pays an annual membership fee of €20.
Those who wish to participate in collective self-consumption pay a one-off self-consumption registration fee (€100 to cover administrative costs) to receive energy from two solar panels (1000 Wp).
These panels provide 5.5 KWh per day, 165 kWh per month (annual average, more in summer, less in winter).
A monthly fee of €21 is paid for this energy (including €3 for administrative costs).
In summary: you receive 165 kWh per month, on an annual average, which is 11 cents per kWh.
This price will remain largely unchanged over the next 25 years, and any changes must be decided unanimously at a general assembly or, if this is not possible, by a 70% majority vote. Typically, it could rise by 1 cent per kWh if more money is needed for management and administration. Not much more... We do not depend on the market price of electricity, and we are a non-profit organisation.
Check your electricity bill to see how much energy you consume each month, particularly between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
You pay €21 per month for your solar energy and save 26% in taxes on the solar energy you produce yourself, which is discounted from your general electricity bill.
The project includes a business case study.
Data changes in one year: we have now calculated an average monthly energy production of 165 kWh per 1000 W of panels. This equates to 2,000 kWh per year at an average price of 11 pence per kWh.
We are looking for 27 families who want to participate in collective self-consumption with 1000 W.
